La Colombe's Pure Black is what happens when a café roaster treats a shelf product like café coffee: single-origin-adjacent beans, a long steep, and a press filtration that leaves the cup notably clean. In my blind lineup it was the can tasters kept reaching back for, which is the least scientific and most convincing data I collect.

The pour

Clear, dark amber-brown — visibly cleaner than the multi-serve bottles, closer to what a careful home brewer pulls off a paper filter. Light chocolate aroma survives the can, which most shelf cold brew can't claim.

The taste

Blind, 38°F, black: dark chocolate and black cherry up front, medium body, gentle acidity that reads as freshness rather than sourness, and a genuinely long finish with no ash and no cardboard. This is the closest a national shelf product gets to tasting like it was brewed this week. It loses a step on strength — it's brewed to be drinkable, not to be fuel, and drinkers calibrated on concentrate cuts will call it polite.

The value math

Here's the tax: the single-serve format works out to several times the per-ounce cost of a value bottle — you're paying a premium for the format as much as the coffee. As an every-so-often treat or a travel move, that's fine. As a daily habit it's a car payment. Value is where this can bleeds points, and no amount of finish rescues arithmetic.
