SANU Coffee Stand

SANU was supposed to be a cold brew stop, and here is the important thing to know before you make the trip: they do not serve cold brew. The whole point of this site is verifying what a shop actually pours, so let's be precise — SANU does not qualify as a cold brew destination, and it does not earn a spot on the Takayama cold brew list.

I ordered the iced pour over instead. It was surprisingly good — good enough that it gets a rating of its own.

The coffee

The first thing you notice is how smooth and clean it drinks. The acidity is low — exactly what I want in a cold coffee — with none of the sharp, sour character that specialty coffee brewed over ice can pick up. The beans are clearly high quality, and the cup has plenty of flavor without ever turning harsh or aggressive.

Most importantly, the finish is clean: no bitterness, no unpleasant aftertaste lingering after the sip. And it's a beautiful glass of coffee — a clear, deep reddish-brown rather than the dark, nearly opaque pour you get from cold brew.

The verdict

Iced pour over: 8.5/10. Cold brew: not rated, because there isn't any.

I would absolutely drink this again — SANU earns a strong recommendation for its iced coffee. If you're specifically hunting cold brew in Takayama, do not come here expecting to find it.
