Kuta, Lombok · Indonesia
Curfew Coffee
A surf-town spot in Kuta, Lombok pouring a remarkably smooth cold brew from locally roasted Aceh Gayo beans — floral caramel up front, chocolate and orange behind it.
Kuta, Lombok is the kind of surf town where "coffee" usually means whatever keeps you upright between swells. Curfew is playing a different game. The room is big, open-air, and easygoing — timber ceilings, a wooden-slat bar, garden light everywhere — but the chalkboard over the bar states the thesis plainly: the coffee is 100% local, single origin, from the Aceh Gayo region of Sumatra, and roasted locally.
The brew

Served black over ice in a rocks glass, and very smooth — the kind of smooth that makes you check whether you've somehow already finished it. The Gayo beans show up exactly the way that origin should when it's treated well: floral caramel first, then chocolate, and a clean orange note that keeps the finish bright instead of heavy. Sumatran coffee has a (deserved) reputation for earthiness; this cup skips the swamp entirely and lands somewhere far more elegant.
Drinking a single origin roasted on the island, minutes from where it's poured, is the whole point of ordering cold brew in Indonesia — this is the glass that argument was made for.
The space
Open on two sides to the garden and the street, ceiling fans doing their slow work, a crowd that runs from laptop nomads at the bar to surfers recapping the morning. It's the rare big room that still feels unhurried — you can sit with a glass through an entire golden hour and nobody minds.
The story
Curfew opened in late 2023 and is better known as Kuta's beer garden, which makes the seriousness of the coffee bar the plot twist. Local roasting, single-origin sourcing from Aceh, and a proper specialty menu — in a town this size, on an island better known for its beaches than its cafés, that's a statement of intent.
Verdict: 9/10 — worth building your Kuta morning around, and the best argument yet for ordering cold brew as close to the farm as you can get.
